I was just wondering if you knew why this piece was composed for either Violin, Viola or Cello as opposed to clearly identifying one solo stringed instrument?

I have found two recordings, one with a Cello soloist as above and another with Viola and it changes the mood and feel of the piece dependent on which instrument is playing the solo line.

No idea I’m afraid. Not completely unknown at this time but rare, certainly.
